A focus group is a marketing tactic that gathers people together to talk about their experiences, motivations, and habits. In the discipline of experience design, usability testing is done by actually observing people work through a series of tasks on an interface. The observer then gains insights into problematic issues and places where people get stuck. These studies are immensely more valuable than focus groups.
